German CNC Machine Tool Suppliers: A 2026 Comparison by Machine Type

German CNC suppliers compared by machine type, control, price band and lead time - with what each brand is actually good at.

Quick answer: Buy 5-axis from DMG MORI, Hermle or GROB; turning centres from DMG MORI or Traub; grinding from STUDER, Walter or Junker; milling from Hermle or GROB; and laser cutting from TRUMPF or Bystronic. Each has a genuinely different technical philosophy, and choosing outside that specialism costs you cycle time for the rest of the machine's life.

Why the brand matters more than the specification sheet

Two German 5-axis machines with identical published work envelopes, identical axis travels and near-identical price will differ by 25-40% in real cycle time on a typical aerospace or automotive part. The difference is thermal behaviour, control tuning, and how the machine was designed to be maintained. This is why buying German machine tools by specification alone reliably produces a disappointing result.

Every manufacturer below has a defensible specialism. The mistake is buying a generalist because the specification matched on paper.

Matching the brand to the work

1

Complex 3D geometry in aerospace or medical

HERMLE or GROB. Both build genuine universal machines with full trunnion or table rotary axes. HERMLE's HSC 400 and 500 U are the class benchmark - the advantage is rigidity and the ability to finish a complex part in one setup rather than three. GROB is stronger where automation and multi-machine cells are required, and its five-axis automation is used in serial aerospace production worldwide.

2

Volume automotive production, aluminium structural parts

HELLER. Nothing else in Germany matches HELLER for cycle time on high-volume structural aluminium. The quintuplex design and the aggressive feed strategy are the point. These are not versatile machines and buying one for general work is a mistake.

3

Gear manufacturing

WALTER for helical gears of any size, LIEBHERR for large gears, and EMAG for gear shaping where you need form factors that grinding cannot reach. If gear accuracy is your product, this is a specialist purchase and should be treated as one.

4

Precision cylindrical grinding

STUDER. The universal grinder, where you need to grind shoulders, tapers and faces in one clamping. If you need production throughput on simple parts, JUNKER or WALTER, or a Swiss-type machine from Traub or Rollomatic-equivalent German suppliers.

5

Sheet metal, 2D laser

TRUMPF or BYSTRONIC. TRUMPF leads on machine-build quality and 3D cutting; BYSTRONIC is competitive and has a very strong service network in more countries. For 4kW+ fibre on thin sheet, both are ahead. For tube cutting, TRUMPF TruLaser and BLM are the reference.

6

Turning

DMG MORI or TRAUB for general purpose. INDEX for multi-spindle work where you need to complete a part finished in one cycle. If your volumes justify it, a turn-mill centre from DMG MORI, INDEX or EMAG removes secondary operations entirely.

What actually drives the price

Two machines from the same manufacturer, same work envelope, can differ by a factor of two. The variables that move the number:

  • Rotary axis configuration - a trunnion table, a tilting table and a table-turning unit are not comparable options. This is the single largest price variable on a 5-axis machine.
  • Spindle - the standard spindle is rarely the right one. High-speed, high-torque and through-coolant versions each add meaningfully, and picking the wrong one is expensive in both directions.
  • Automation - a pallet system, a robot cell or a magazine loader. On a 5-axis machine, automation frequently pays for itself within 18 months by running unattended overnight.
  • Measuring - in-situ spindle and table probing, plus an on-machine measurement system such as ZEISS or RENISHAW. This is what converts a 5-axis machine from a positioning device into a capable measurement device, and it eliminates hours of downstream inspection.
  • Options package - chip management, coolant filtration to 10 microns, oil mist extraction, dust extraction, trunnion washdown. All necessary in practice, all easy to omit during a price negotiation and regret later.
Ask for the delivered price with the options you will actually run with. German machines are frequently quoted at a specification that produces a machine which cannot machine the part. The gap between quote and usable machine typically shows up as EUR 40,000 to 200,000, and it is discovered after the order is placed.

Lead times and delivery in 2026

Machine typeTypical lead time from orderNote
Configured 3-axis machining centre, in stock config8-14 weeksDeliverable from standard configuration
Configured 5-axis, custom options20-34 weeksRotary axis choice drives most of this
Universal grinder with automation26-40 weeksAutomation integration is usually the long pole
Fibre laser 4-6kW14-22 weeksFaster than comparable CO2 in the current market
Turn-mill centre with bar feeder18-28 weeks

These are indicative for the 2026 market and they are longer than pre-2020 norms. Order lead time, not machine price, is frequently the binding constraint in a capacity plan. If you need a machine inside 12 months, that conversation belongs with the manufacturer at the specification stage, not with the dealer afterwards.

How to evaluate a quote properly

  1. Get the cycle time on your actual part, cut on their machine. A sample cut is worth more than any specification sheet. Most manufacturers will do this if you supply a drawing and a blank.
  2. Ask for the full spindle specification - power at each speed range, torque curve, through-coolant pressure, and the warranty terms.
  3. Confirm service coverage in your country - not "Europe", but your specific region, with the response time for a technician on site.
  4. Ask what the control software version is and whether it is upgradeable without hardware replacement. Siemens 840D sl is current; 840D is not, and a machine on 840D with an expiring licence is a depreciating asset.
  5. Price the options you will genuinely use in the first quotation, and price them again at PO stage to catch scope drift.
  6. Negotiate the commissioning and training, not only the machine price. Commissioning days, on-site training days and remote support terms are where German manufacturers have genuine flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the largest CNC machine tool manufacturer in Germany?

DMG MORI is the largest, formed from the 2014 merger of DMG Deckel Maho and Mori Seiki, and it has the broadest portfolio of any machine tool builder in the world - turning, milling, 5-axis, gear shaping and additive. GROB and TRUMPF are the next largest by revenue, and HERMLE, STUDER and WALTER are the best-known specialists.

What is the most reliable German CNC machine brand?

Reliability depends on the machine class, not the brand. In 5-axis universal machining HERMLE and GROB are the reference. In high-volume automotive aluminium HELLER is unmatched. In precision cylindrical grinding STUDER is the global benchmark. In helical gear grinding WALTER leads. The reliable choice is the manufacturer whose specialism matches your part, not the largest manufacturer.

How much does a 5-axis CNC machine cost in Germany?

A German 5-axis machining centre ranges from roughly EUR 250,000 for an EMAG or HELLER configuration to EUR 1.6m for a GROB or fully automated HERMLE production cell. The largest price driver is the rotary axis configuration - a trunnion table can add EUR 300,000 or more over a simple tilting table. Spindle specification, automation and on-machine measurement are the next three variables.

How long does it take to deliver a German CNC machine?

In the 2026 market, expect 8-14 weeks for a configured 3-axis machining centre from standard configuration, 20-34 weeks for a custom 5-axis, 26-40 weeks for a grinder with automation, and 14-22 weeks for a fibre laser. These are longer than pre-2020 norms and are frequently the binding constraint in a capacity plan, so lead time should be agreed at specification stage.

Should I buy a German or Chinese CNC machine?

For general 3-axis work, Chinese machines deliver comparable capability at 40-60% of the price, and for many buyers that is the correct decision. German machines earn their premium in specific places: complex 5-axis simultaneous work, high-volume aluminium, precision grinding, and where machine uptime directly multiplies a high-value product. Buying German for general 3-axis work is paying for capability you will not use.
