Before placing a large order with a German supplier, verify they are legitimate. Germany has strict business registration laws, but fake companies and scams still exist, especially online. This guide covers every verification step.

Step 1: Check Handelsregister (Commercial Register)

Every legitimate German company is registered in the Handelsregister (Commercial Register).

Visit handelsregister.de (official German government site)
Search by company name or HRB number (Handelsregister B)
Verify: Company name, legal form (GmbH, AG, KG), managing directors, registered address
Check: Company was registered BEFORE your first contact (scammers often register new companies 2-3 weeks before approaching buyers)

Step 2: Verify VDMA or Industry Association Membership

Legitimate German industrial suppliers are typically members of VDMA (German Engineering Federation, 3,600+ members) or ZVEI (Electrical/Electronics).
