Offshore Wind Farm Maintenance Companies in Europe 2026
Reading time: 6 minutes
Offshore wind farms need maintenance 2-4 times per turbine per year, but a single failed gearbox can idle a 10 MW unit for weeks. Because sites sit 20-100 km from shore, only companies with crew-transfer vessels (CTVs), helicopter access or service jack-ups win the work. Germany alone had 30 GW of offshore wind in the German Bight and Baltic by 2026, almost all under long-term O&M contracts.
- Turbine OEMs (Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, GE) run the largest service arms
- Independent specialists (DEME, Van Oord, Bilfinger) cover balance-of-plant and major repairs
- Service-vessel operators provide the access that makes everything else possible
European offshore O&M providers
| Provider | Base | Covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siemens Gamesa Service | Hamburg / Cuxhaven | Full O&M for SG turbines | Owns CTV fleet in German Bight |
| Vestas Offshore Service | Esbjerg, DK | Full O&M for V-turbines | North Sea coverage from Esbjerg |
| Bilfinger | Germany | Balance-of-plant, towers, access | Strong on offshore substructures |
| DEME Offshore | Belgium | Foundations, cables, heavy lift | Owns jack-up vessels |
| Van Oord | Netherlands | Cables, installation, O&M | Baltic + North Sea |
OEM service arms
The turbine manufacturer is almost always the default O&M contractor for the rotating equipment because only they hold the type certification, spare-parts IP and software keys. Siemens Gamesa services its own SG 11-14 MW fleet across the German Bight; Vestas covers its V236 platform.
Use an independent for subsea cables, foundation repair, coating and major-component exchange where the OEM subcontracts anyway.
Service vessels and access
Access is the constraint. Crew-transfer vessels work up to sea state 1.5 m; beyond that you need a service operation vessel (SOV) with a gangway or a helicopter. Providers based in Cuxhaven, Esbjerg and Eemshaven have the shortest transit to the main German and Danish arrays.
How to choose
Shortlist on three things: vessel transit time to your array (under 4h one-way), certified access for your sea state, and whether they hold the OEM software licence for your turbine. Then confirm they carry the German Berufsgenossenschaft (BG) offshore safety certification.
